What
is a Discovery Overnight Mission?
A typical overnight mission aboard the USS Discovery is designed
for students grades 5-8. Upon arrival at 7:00 p.m., the flight
director takes the crew through the airlock into the crew compartment
of the ship. There they will learn a little about the Discovery universe
and the function of each station, and will be assigned which station
they will be responsible for. Training will then commence. Most
stations will have a prerecorded narration to guide each crew member
through station operation, with staff members on hand to answer questions
as needed. After training, the crew is briefed on the situation
in the area of space in which their mission will take place, as well
as on their objectives and goals for completing the mission successfully.
From there the flight director will leave the crew and begin the
mission that they will be required to complete on their own. From
then until the next morning, the crew will experience an intense, vivid
journey into the unknown that will challenge their decision-making and
teamwork abilities as well as bring out their own talents and areas
for improvement.
